The Olivier, Tony and Whatsonstage award-winning comedy The 39 Steps has celebrated 9 years in the West End since it opened at the Criterion Theatre in 2006. The 39 Steps’ 9 year run will close on September 5th 2015, having played the 5th highest number of performances of any play in West End history.

 The 39 Steps, now celebrating its sixth year in the West End, has grossed over twenty million pounds since it opened at the Criterion Theatre in 2006. It is now the longest running consecutive show in the theatre’s 137 year history.

Is there anyone who hasn't read The 39 Steps?  The classic novel by John Buchan is still widely read and loved today after nearly a century since publication in 1915 which just goes to show that the public love a good adventure story of a man on the run and that is filled with spies and espionage.

Today, 9 July, Paul Bigley (Man) joins other cast members Andrew Alexander (Richard Hannay), Catherine Bailey (Pamela/Annabella/Margaret) and Stephen Critchlow (Man) in the hilarious, multi award-winning comedy, The 39 Steps at the Criterion Theatre.

The West End production of The 39 Steps is a show that refuses to die.   Seldomly playing to capacity audiences these days it still musters enough interest to tick over and is now well into its sixth West End year.    The stage version is adapted by Patrick Barlow and is based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan, but actually leans more towards the better known 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film version.   Taking the wry comedic undertones from the film to the next level it emerges as a twisted farce version of the Hitchcock classic.   This is heightened by the fact that only four actors appear on stage - one as the lead Richard Hannay, one as the three woman he has romantic liaisons with and another two playing between 100 and 150 other roles, from men, women and children to inanimate objects.  They change into these roles at lightning speed, oftentimes having to play multiple characters at the same time with the frenetic pacing played for laughs.

Dianne Pilkington, previously starring in Wicked as good witch Glinda, joined the new cast of the multi award-winning The 39 Steps, the West End’s longest-running comedy, at the Criterion Theatre
